Rooted Verse #9:

[Hebrews 12:11]

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

After my last blog about discipline, I decided to write the verse on my bathroom mirror so I had to look at it and pray over it every day. I liked doing that. It held me accountable and made it easier to remember the verse I was supposed to be praying over.

As I’ve been focused more on discipline, I’ve definitely seen fruit of it, but not as much as I’d like to see. When I think about “Well what kind of fruit am I looking for,” I realize I need to set some goals in order to have something to aim for.

One of the best things I’m learning right now is that goals don’t need to mean: “This is exactly where I need to end up by the end of this.”

Goals can simply mean: “Here’s where I’m going to start. Slow, small, baby steps. And once I accomplish that, I’ll adjust and be one step closer to where I am trying to go.”

So here are my three goals:

  • 10 Verses – Read 10 verses in the Bible a day
    • I love this because it’s a simple, non-lofty goal that it gets me in the Word every day. I can read whatever 10 verses I want and since 10 verses doesn’t seem like a lot, I’m more likely to do it. Then I’m still seeking my Father’s face, and with discipline in these first 10, will soon become 15, 20, 30, up to entire chapters maybe. But first comes the humility in saying, “Let’s start with 10.”
  • 10 Pages – Read 10 pages of a book I’m reading
    • I.love.reading. But for some reason I find excuses not to do it. I have so many books sitting on my bookcase that I desire to read. Even if I don’t desire to read a particular book, I still feel like I should, because wisdom comes from knowledge and knowledge comes from information and information comes from reading some books. So once again, not a lofty goal, but I’m hoping that by becoming disciplined in reading a simple 10 pages, comes the discipline to pick up a book instead of my phone.
  • Rooted Verse – Praying over my Rooted Verse for that week
    • Once again. Simple reminder. But an important one.

All three of these goals are now written on my calendar for each day of this week.

If I do it, I get a

If I don’t do it, no

Simple as that.

Rooted Verse #10:

[Matthew 5:14 & 16]

“You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.”
